NO cheating and looking it up on wikipedia. I went to the national archives in DC and literally no one cared or even looked at the magna carta. Surly that document is as important as any other in that building. How many Americans know what the Magna Carta is?
I don't know it and I don't remember being it taught to me in school. How many Americans know what the Magna Carta is?
i have heard of it. all i know is that it's british and limited the king's power. i believe it was signed in 1215 by king john? but idk.
I do! I do!
Well in florida you're taught all about the Magna Carta in high school
I believe it was an agreement between the King and his landed subjects that granted them some basic rights to their holdings that the King could not simply ignore at his whim. It did not do much for the have-nots, but it was a huge step in the right direction with respect to personal liberty. Am I close?
I think it is was a European document that took a significant step in recognizing freedom. You see, some monarch or king must have had his power limited an extent by the document.
The Magna Carta is an English document that is of great importance to the modern world, especially in countries like the U.S. The Magna Carta set the precedent for concepts like taxing the people with their consent (Ex: The House of Representatives functions in this way since it supposedly represents the American population as a whole and must originate money bills). Most importantly, however, this document gave the world the greatest English political contribution, that of ';limited government.';
Magna Carta is the Constitution... duh.
In 1215 King Alexander II of Scotland was a signatory of the Magna Carta.
I'm ashamed to say that I had to look that up.
Scottish history was not well taught in schools. We got 1066, The Battle of Hastings and all that, but we were NOT taught that the Scottish King at that time was Malcolm III aka Malcolm Canmore.
As you can probably guess I am Scottish.
The Magna Carta may have been the inspiration for the Declaration of Independence.
Signed by King John, ending absolute monarchy, yeah?
Or at least that's what I remember from high school history class...
Don't be snobbish about Americans. Remember that we gave the world most of its Nobel Prize winners in sciences. The whole world copies our fashions, way of life, political traditions, food, movies, music, etc.
Many people falsely believe The Magna Carta Libertatum its full name (The Great Charter of Freedom) was signed by King John in 1215 - WRONG !!!
He never signed it - LOL.He DID affix the Royal Seal , but only the noblemen actually SIGNED it.
There are very many copies of this important document in existence throughout the world ,even in the US funnily enough ,and was the inspiration for the Declaration of Independance.
